STOP WASTING GRASS SEED - PREGERMINATE
Pre-Germinating Grass Seed for Faster Lawn Repair
Stop wasting grass seed and feeding the birds instead of improving your lawn. Pre-germinating grass seed helps your lawn establish faster by starting the sprouting process before the seed ever touches the ground.
Instead of watering and waiting, watering and waiting, you can often see new growth within about a week. Pre-germination also helps reduce seed loss from birds, heavy rain, and runoff, making better use of expensive grass seed.
What You Need
- 5 gallon bucket
- 5 gallon paint strainer bag
- Grass seed
- Water
- Small rock or weight
- Compost, quality soil, or coco coir for spreading
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prepare the Bucket
Place the paint strainer bag inside the 5 gallon bucket, stretching the elastic edge around the rim of the bucket.
2. Add Grass Seed
Fill the paint strainer bag about halfway with grass seed. Do not overfill, as the seed will expand as it absorbs water.
3. Secure the Bag
Tie off the top of the paint strainer bag so the seed cannot escape.
4. Soak the Seed
Fill the bucket with water until the grass seed is completely submerged. Place a clean rock or other weight on the bag to keep it from floating.
5. Change the Water
Change the water every 12 hours for approximately 36 hours.
6. Drain the Bucket
After the soaking period, drain the water from the bucket.
7. Continue Moistening the Seed
Every 12 hours, dunk the paint strainer bag into fresh water and then allow it to drain again. Continue this process until you begin to see tiny white roots sprouting from the seed.
Be careful not to let the roots grow too long inside the bag, as they can become tangled and difficult to spread evenly.
8. Important: Spread Immediately
Once the seed begins sprouting, quickly mix the pre-germinated grass seed with a spreading medium such as:
- Compost
- Quality topsoil
- Coco coir
This helps distribute the seed evenly and keeps the delicate sprouts moist during installation.
Apply to Bare Lawn Areas
Spread the seed and soil mixture evenly over the bare or thin areas of your lawn where new grass growth is desired.
Keep the area consistently moist while the new grass establishes. Because the seed has already started germinating, you should see growth much faster than with traditional dry seeding methods.
